Live By Living "hut" retreats are the most challenging of all our retreat offerings. On hut retreats, you will hike 3-5 miles uphill to a fabulous, remote log cabin high in the Colorado Rockies, and spend the next 3 days making friends with people who understand what you've been through, enjoying the beauty of the mountains, eating gourmet-cancer-fighting food, and relaxing. We have a beefy pickup truck to haul in all the food and overnight gear, so you just need to carry a light day pack with rain gear, lunch, water and snacks. We can also give you a ride to the cabin if you are not up for the hike in.
Uncle Bud's Hut is a perennial favorite among the Tenth Mountain huts. The hike to Uncle Bud's is about 4.5 miles long, and gains about 1300 feet of elevation. Uncle Bud's sleeps 16 people in two bedrooms (one has 4 beds, another has 6) and a communal area with 7 single beds. It sits at 11,370 feet. There is no electricity, and no running water. This cabin has an outhouse. You can read more about Uncle Bud’s Hut here. It takes about 2 hours to get to our meeting point in Leadville from central Denver.
Because of the high elevation of this cabin, this trip is not suitable for people coming from at or near sea level. Similarly, because this is no electricity, this trip is not suitable for people who are dependent on electric devices like oxygen concentrators or CPAP machines.
With the panorama of Mount Massive right out the front windows of the hut, Uncle Bud's offers "intrepid trailblazers" a truly rewarding vista. There are great day hike options from Uncle Bud's hut, whether you just want a moderate hike to the nearby Bear Lake, or a more challenging climb to St. Kevin's Lake, just below the face of Galena Mountain.
The hike to Uncle Bud's will take most of the day. We'll have time to rest and relax before appetizers and dinner. On the second day, people will have a choice of a moderate hike to St. Kevin's Lake or an easier hike near the cabin. Or, you can just hang out on the deck and watch the clouds go by. On the third day, we'll hike out an easier route, retrieve our cars, and be back in Leadville in time for lunch. We provide dinner the first day, all 3 meals on the second day, and breakfast on the third day.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Each participant, whether you are a cancer survivor/thriver or a caregiver, must register separately. If you are coming with another person, we recommend that you register at the same time to minimize the chances one of you is waitlisted. Each person must create their own account and register under that account.
- Often times, spots open within a week of the trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Participants on the waitlist often are able to join the retreat, provided they have submitted all required forms.
*Retreats are free of charge for cancer survivors/thrivers and caregivers.
