January 24th
South Valley Park
Leader(s): Blaine, Jan, Cal and Ilan
Where: South Valley Park, a Jefferson County Open Space area, is located behind (i.e. west) of the “hogback” ridge in the southwest Littleton/ Ken Caryl Valley area. We’ll be meeting at the north parking lot. It is best accessed by going west from the light at C470 and Ken Caryl Ave. Turn left (south) at the 1st light to proceed on South Valley Road. Go up the hill and continue straight through the stop sign. The entrance to the parking lot is on the left about a ¼ mile past the stop sign. We’ll meet by the trail map.
Google Maps Plus Code: HR8W+CRX
Description: With dramatic sandstone rock formations, much like Roxborough State Park, the South Valley trails offer great backdrops as the trails wind around through the oak brush. Deer are almost always seen as are hawks during the right times of year. We’ll make a loop on the Coyote Song and Swallow Trails. We may also include a side trip to catch the views at the top of ridge if there are people who are “game” for it.
ADA accessible: No – all the paths are dirt and can get icy when packed down after snows.
Entrance fees: No
Distance: 2 -3 miles
Elevation gain: not much but there are hills.
Dogs allowed: Yes, if leashed and well-behaved.
Toilets at the trailhead: Yes
Be sure to bring: Water, sunscreen, hat and desire to get out and enjoy nature
