Description: As the 3rd Saturday in the month, this week offers the special treat of walking with cancer-care practitioners from Advent Health as part of their, “Walk With Us” collaboration with LBL. This South Suburban Recreation District trail follows Lee Gulch 4.5 miles from C470 on the East to just west of Santa Fe Drive where it joins the South Platte River. We’ll be on the middle section of the trail traversing up to 1.2 miles out and back (2.4 miles total) along the cottonwood and willow-lined trail to the historic Highline Canal flume that crosses Lee Gulch. The wide trail has both concrete sections and well-maintained pea-gravel sections generally suitable for wheelchairs. The stream usually is flowing and has a couple small but scenic drops. There are views of Mt. Blue Sky (formerly Mt. Evans) and nice bird-watching opportunities along the riparian vegetation. For patients and caregivers that go to Littleton Advent Hospital, the trail passes right by the North side of the hospital and is a great place to relax/ decompress before, after or between appointments or treatments (that is how I discovered it.)
Entrance fees: None
Distance: 1.2 miles out and back (2.4 miles total) or longer depending on group’s interests (for wheelchairs or those wanting a short outing, we can start with a nice loop around the adjoining Puma Park and along the stream)
Elevation gain: Negligible – (follows the gently-sloped stream)
Dogs allowed: Yes, if well-behaved and leashed
Toilets at the trailhead: Portal toilets only - at Powell Middle School and nearby Puma Park
